REALLY bad news... And RIP Cooper

Cooper was put down... He had a brain issue. He bit my dad TWICE! He was only 2 years old. God I miss him. I'm crying as I write this. We might get a pug-a-poo though... But it will NEVER replace Cooper. So I probably won't be on much. My great grandma is REALLY sick and the chemo will/might kill her. My great grandpa is losing it mentally. And Cooper was put down yesterday. I keep expecting him to come and say hello, howl, or get out. It was so bad that the vet that my grandparents used for their dogs since my mom was little wouldn't let my dad leave the clinic w/out putting him down. This is NOT what Cooper was normally like. He had a degenerative condition that caused him to get aggressive and would have made him die a very horrible and painful death in a couple of years. I can't write anymore. It hurts to much...

PS: I need a LOT of prayer. I feel like I'm hitting rock bottom again

Oh my Gosh! I haven't posted on here in FOREVER! Well here is a little over view of my life!

I went to Charleston to visit some friends (Karis and her fam), I turned 14, Sonny and I unofficially passed L3, I write CONSTANTLY, I've made a TON of friends (taken long enough!), and starting Monday am going to update ALL of my blogs at LEAST once a week!

I've probably done more but can't think of anything else :}! lol! Well I've gtg and fight with photobucket now :|...

School and busyness...

I JUST got finished with school! We started yesterday so everything is SUPER easy:)! I am taking Algebra 2, Hebrew, Economics, and Biology for my high school courses and I am only in 8th GRADE!!!! But everything, so far, is REALLY easy:). We go to a co-op on Monday, Bright Lights on Tuesday, Wednesday we are going down to Naples to visit my cousins and to see my grandparents, normally on Wednesday we have school at FCA until 9-3 but that doesn't start till next week, and after school on FCA days I have a Biology Lab from 3-5:30ish! BUSY!!!! Oh and Thursday I give a lesson to my cousin and a friend of hers! So my only free day is FRIDAY!!!! UGH!!!! But Oh Well... What are y'all doing for school? Are y'all as busy as me? Comment and tell me!!

Whoa! Last night was ROUGH!!! Anna Grace spit up blood so we called the doctor and the doctor said if she did it again to go to the hospital. Well then she fell asleep on mom so mom woke her up because she needed bath. SHE WOULD NOT GET UP!!!! She finally got up so I gave her her bath. SHE PEED NEON GREEN/YELLOW PEE!!!! So mom and dad brought us to the neighbors and rushed to the hospital. She ended up being fine but we NEVER spend the night at friends houses' but last night we had to. We went to bed late and then we went home when they had to got to school:)! STRESSFUL!!!! But Oh, Well...

I don't know if I ever told ya'll but a couple of weeks or so ago my Aunt was diagnosed w/ chronic hepatitis and it was neither curable or treatable. It meant that in 15-20 yrs she would have a flare up and would have a slow and painful death. Here is a description of Hepatitis~

Hepatitis (plural hepatitides) implies injury to the liver characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. She is NOT an alcoholic or anything so they thought it was the auto-immune thing. So we had EVERYONE praying for her and she took the test again and she DID NOT HAVE IT!!!! It ended up she has something wrong w/ her sphinx (???) and that it can be fixed w/ medicine or a simple surgery! YAY! This family has had so much heartache w/ Uncle Todd dying in August, my paternal Great Grandmother dying as I type, and my maternal Great Grandmother dying from cancer as I type......

REALLY funny Story (do not read if you read it on my other blog)

I HAVE to tell you what happened this morning!!!

We were walking down the rode for our daily walk and all the sudden this horse comes barreling down Mr. Porter's driveway. We try to make sure it didn't go anywhere and mom, Anna, Lexi, and Hailey head to the house to see if someone was home. No one was, but while they were looking me and Manna (my maternal grandmother) tried to keep the horse from heading towards the main road, which is a VERY busy road, and she didn't go anywhere but she was in heat so she was over checkin' out the boys across the street. Every time they would touch her though she would strike out and kick at the same time. So I didn't go near her cause my mom would have strangled me : - D! lol! Well then someone drove by and went to grab a halter from her property. My mom then came back and said no one was home but then while the lady was gone Mr. Porter's girlfriend (???) came by and caught the horse so we then continued w/ our walk:)!

Saturday I went on the boat and while we were out I got a WICKED sunburn! But while we were in an idle zone a dolphin came up and SWAM RIGHT NEXT TO THE BOAT!!! It was DIRECTLY by where I was sitting! He went and looked at us w/ his right eye and it was as if he was asking "where is the food dude???" It was HILLARIOUS!! Then a couple minutes later we saw a manatee which is very rare especially in the ICW (Inter Coastal Waterway)..... Well gtg Anna is crying and I want to get home so I can watch The movie Pride and Prejudice, My FAV book, I just got from the Library.......

New Siggy and Descriptive essay

Yo! Like my new siggy? I do! lol! Well here is a descriptive essay I did and I'll post it for you~

As the horse trots he lifts up his legs as if trotting on air. His mane and tail billow out around him. He breaks into a canter. The ground shakes with each successive stride. The hooves plant themselves with such confidence in the tuff terrain.

The powerful muscles work underneath the tight red gold hide of his body and his hide gleams in the warm sunlight. His ears are rimmed with black, his lower legs are the darkest black I have ever seen, and around his nostrils are rings of black. The billowing mane and tail are as black as ebony and as thick as a lion’s mane. His dainty ears flick this way and that looking for predators. He isn’t the slightest bit winded.

He turns his head towards you; he doesn’t slow down but moves ever faster towards you. By the look on his face you can tell he is thrilled to see you. The joy of his liking you so much is overwhelming! When he gets to you he stops and puts his head on your shoulder. You can tell he loves being with people.

I have a story I am goin to post in a couple days..... Oh and I have also started Parrelli I'll post about it later...

Sorry I haven't posted in a while........ My laptop decided it would make my life as hard as possible by just not working (UGH!!!!!!!!!! I HATE that laptop!) We moved in! Sonny nickered at me today when I went into the paddock (w/out food mind you) and my Great Grandma*tears and choking back sobs-really-*may be dying (not positive)........... I LOVE MY ROOM!!!!! Plus the dogs never come into the house anymore YES!!! I have also started a book, it is called Running to the Wild Horses and here is an exerpt~

As I step into the fog, I turn around for one last look. The two story Ranch house seems to reach through the fog to wrap its arms around me to hold me close, the white paint glistens in the moonlight, and the red shutters whisper goodbye. I am going to miss the old house. It holds a lot of old memories, memories of my parents and childhood, memories of long bygone days, and memories of the happy family I shall never have again.

Mom went into labor but they stopped it and the c-section is scheduled for April 3....... We moved in a couple of weeks ago and it has been AWESOME!!! But no internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Red and Rambo are HILLARIOUS!!! They just do the funniest things..... Been riding fairly regular. We mostly just puts around and I am slowly conditioning his muscles (and mine) to exercise again. Saturday we worked on our flying lead changes and he did AWESOME! All I had to do was guide him to the pole and he did the rest now I just have to get him to do that when I ask for it without the pole Hmm...................... I'm thinking of starting Parrelli w/ the horses. Comment and tell me what you think! I'll post something I did for school a while back and that should hold ya over.

As the first performance clones become adults, the equine industry will soon see if the genetic twins can truly live up to their originals. And while the cloning procedure has raised some eyebrows among industry veterans, owners are lining up for the chance to preserve their horses’ genetic influence.

The black foal nursing at the Paint mare’s side doesn’t look like a four-legged outlaw, the equine equivalent of Billy the Kid. He doesn’t look like he has the potential to transform into an explosion of horseflesh that can slam the most experienced rodeo cowboy into the dirt.

But his genes say he does.

Dubbed Airwolf Too until officially named, the foal is a clone of 435 Airwolf, the rank, raunchy, gray gelding who bucked his way into rodeo history when he tied the all-time leading saddle-bronc score in 1996. Owned by Franklin Rodeo Company of Alberta, Canada, and produced by commercial cloning and gene-banking company ViaGen, Airwolf Too is the cantankerous gelding’s genetic twin. And it already shows.
“When they went to grab him to check him at the hospital about an hour after he was born, he was jumping and bucking and swooping around,” says Shane Franklin, owner of Franklin Rodeo Company. “He threw off one of the guys that grabbed him. If you tried to get hold of Airwolf today, he’d do the same thing.”
Foaled August 4 of this year at Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital in Canyon, Texas, Airwolf Too is seen as an opportunity to reverse a decision made more than 20 years ago. The original Airwolf was gelded, as was K2 Kingsway, who Franklin also plans to clone.
“Everyone knows hindsight is great,” he says. “When those horses go on to become champions, you think, ‘Why didn’t we leave them as studs?’ Now we’ve got the chance to get that back.”
Anecdotal evidence suggests Airwolf Too is on the bucking path of his 24-year-old original, but it’s still unknown how much his genes will contribute to his success. This year, the first American performance horse clones turned 2 and 3, and by the end of 2009, at least one will be tested against the success of the original.
Clone owners are pressing for breed associations to register clones, which none of them currently allow. Some in the industry fear the debate could snowball into litigation similar to that which the American Quarter Horse Association saw several years ago with the registration of embryo-transferred foals. The legal battle lasted two years, the association lost $550,000 in attorney’s fees, and the restriction against embryo-transferred foals was lifted.
Recently, the National Cutting Horse Association approved a policy allowing clones to show in aged events, the first time an equine performance organization set a specific policy on cloning. However, because clones are restricted from breed associations, they’re also restricted from breed-sanctioned shows.
As America’s cloned horses come into training and showing age, some owners want to find out where their investments stand. Although the procedure was controversial when it was first implemented, owners are now lining up to have their horses cloned.
Critics of the cloning industry, some of whom are breeders, are also waiting. Will clones be competitive against today’s horses? Will cloning, a $150,000 procedure, give the industry elite a breeding advantage? Will preserving the genes of yesterday’s horses prohibit the advancement of tomorrow’s legends?
Some genetic markers can be seen in action. For example, horses with certain bloodlines, such as four-time PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year Grated Coconut, seem to have bucking in their blood.
“His mother, Coconut Roll, is just as good as he is,” says Gregg Veneklasen, DVM, an equine-reproduction specialist who began transferring clone embryos for ViaGen in 2006. ViaGen, the commercial cloning and gene-banking company based in Austin, Texas, controls the patent for equine cloning.
“His ability to buck goes right down the line. It’s a family in which everything bucks.
“I truly believe DNA is far more powerful than we were ever told it is. I think it controls behavior and everything else.”
Four-time saddle-bronc champion Clint Johnson, who cloned Go Wild, the champion bucking horse given to him by the Calgary Stampede when the gelding retired, agrees.
But cloning has yet to determine how much of a horse’s success is genetic. Until now, none of the cloned horses have been old enough to test against their originals. That’s about to change.

Phil Rapp, the cutting industry’s all-time earnings leader, plans to show Whats On Tap, a replicate of multiple National Cutting Horse Association champion Tap Olena, in the 2009 NCHA Futurity. Under NCHA rules, a horse does not have to be registered with a breed association to be shown. Any 3-year-old can compete.

Rapp also owned Playboys Ruby Too, a clone of Playboys Ruby, the second all-time leading producer of cutting horses, until he sold both mares in 2006.

From the beginning, Rapp has said his goal is to see if the clones compete as well as the originals.

“Whats On Tap is very much like her original,” says Rapp, who raised and trained Tap Olena. “Playboys Ruby Too is much like Playboys Ruby’s colts.”

NCHA and other performance groups, such as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and National Barrel Horse Association, allow clones to show, but breed associations balk at registration.

Last year, lawyer Ernest Cannon, who owns two clones of Jae Bar Fletch, filed for registration applications with AQHA. The association tabled a proposal to amend Rule 227a, which doesn’t allow registration of clones, pending further study. The association is expected to act on the proposal at its March 2009 convention.

Several years ago, the association faced a similar situation with several breeders who wanted to register embryo-transfer foals. After a two-year battle and facing millions of dollars in damage claims, AQHA reached an out-of-court settlement that allowed the foals to be registered.

“I think they opened the door to allow that; they left themselves vulnerable,” says Susie Reed, manager of Polo Ranch in Marietta, Oklahoma. “But I don’t see any vulnerability in this. I think they could refuse to do this. I don’t think there’s a need for [registering clones]. What do you register them as? Do you register them as the same horse?”

With other clones, such as Airwolf Too, paperwork is less important to the horse’s career. In fact, it’s likely Airwolf Too will go straight to stud.

“I will probably never buck these horses because the chance of them getting hurt is too high,” Franklin says. “Airwolf and Kingsway don’t need to prove themselves. That’s why we cloned them. I need them to breed to mares to get better offspring for professional rodeo as a whole.”

With two childhood friends—professional bull rider Kelly Armstrong and retired bullfighter Jason Davidson—Franklin set up a cloning partnership, Best Buckin Clones Inc., with the intention of standing cloned stallions to select mares.

“I don’t mind what Phil and Mary Ann Rapp are doing,” says Brenda Pieper of Pieper Ranch, also located in Marietta. Pieper Ranch stands several stallions including Playgun, 1996’s top money-earning 4-year-old cutting horse.

While Pieper does not support the use of clones as breeding animals, she understands why horse owners wonder how clones will perform in competition.

“The Rapps are riding theirs, they’re trying them,” she says. “They’re testing them soundness-wise, they’re testing them ability-wise. And if they’re good enough, they’re going to test them in the show pen.

“I wouldn’t do it, but the way Phil and Mary Ann are doing it would be something I could live with. But I would be very much opposed to doing it just for the sake of putting that animal into the breeding herd.”

Pieper says breeders should be striving to improve and expand the gene pool. Cloning, she says, is a step backwards.

“My idea of moving forward in the breeding business would be to try to raise the best daughter of Playgun we possibly can, and breed her to whatever we feel is the best new, young sire to come along,” Pieper says. “And, hopefully, do even better than the previous generation.”

Veneklasen contends that Franklin’s partnership could be a way to improve the breeding process and reduce costs. He also sees cloning as a means to preserve endangered species and take the guesswork out of breeding.

“I think the time will come when people will stand bucking-horse stallions,” he says. “It’s too costly to breed 200 mares and hope three of the offspring will buck. Why not breed the ones you already know will buck? Even though cloning is expensive, when you put pencil to paper it’s actually cheaper.”

Some are less convinced.

“We’re not even real big on embryo transfers,” says Reed, who stands stallions Gallo del Cielo (aka “Rooster”), Boonlight Dancer and Soula Jule Star at Polo Ranch. “We do a lot of them for customers and we do some ourselves, but all of us here believe we’re supposed to be producing better with each generation, and we believe when a horse is gone, he’s gone. We’ve got some semen frozen from Rooster, and I don’t even know if I’d use it if he died.”

Because of the price of cloning and “negative opinion about it,” Reed doesn’t see cloning changing the breeding industry, even if clones are allowed to register.

“I don’t think there will be enough of them to make an impact either way,” she says. “$150,000 is a lot of money.”

He’s black with a white star, but in a few years he’s expected to gray out like the original. Also like the original, Airwolf Too is expected to be a pistol.

“If he wants to nurse and the mare is lying down, he goes and bites her in the ear to get her up,” Franklin says. “When he gets about a year old, his true colors, his personality will come out. If he’s even half as wild and raunchy as the original, he’ll be good enough.”

After he was born, Franklin received more than 100 phone calls from people throughout the United States and Canada, interested to know more about the clone.

“Guys at the grocery store and tire shop ask me how the little guy’s doing,” he says. “When I walk down Main Street, people with suits and ties, who you’d think would have absolutely no interest in horses, ask me about the colt.”

Airwolf Too will stay at Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital with his surrogate mare until spring, when he’ll move to Bonnyville, Alberta, Franklin says.

Until then, he’s just another foal—but with a 24-year-old twin.

Hi ya'll! Sorry I haven't posted in FOREVER!!!! Well the trip was ~~stress free~~ full of stress at the begining, first it took us 2 and a half hours to just get Arby at the foot of the ramp, then Jamie came and we used a butt rope(a butt rope is a rope you put on a horses to get them to make them walk forward)to get her on the trailer......... Then came the VERY stressful part, Sonny had a hissy fit about going on the trailer, so it took us FOREVER to get him on EVEN w/ the butt rope, so Mrs.Irby decided to start whipping the poor horse! Well dad and Mrs.Jamie put an end to that real quick*giggles*. But after that the trip was uneventful but of course everytime we stopped and Sonny wasn't getting pet through the window opening he would whinny and kick the trailer. Here are some pics of them on the trailer~

But of course SOMETHING had to happen, right? Correct! Sonny got hives YAY(jk it was HORRIBLE!!!)! Well let me start from the begining..........

I went out to feed thier pm feed and Sonny looks a little funny so I go over and look closer and his eye's were swelling shut and his face was swollen so mom called the vet right away and then ran home to get my dad well during that time my Aunt came over and well I got left alone w/ Sonny and off went the waterworks. He loved it when I would scratch the hives on his neck so, as you can see in this pic, he REALLY enjoyed it(blow up the pic and zero in on his eye and you will see how swollen it is)~

The vet came just as there was enough light left to see and told us it was hives and that he had NO clue what caused it and then gave him banamine and an anti-inflamatory(did I spell that right?). Well here are some random pics~

Your Horse is your gift


To have a horse in your life is a gift. In the matter
of a few short years, a horse can teach a young girl
courage, if she chooses to grab mane and hang on 
for dear life. Even the smallest of ponies is
mightier than the tallest of girls. To conquer the
fear of falling off, having one's toes crushed, or 
being publicly humiliated at a horse show is
an admirable feat for any child. For that, we can be 
grateful.

Horses teach us responsibility. Unlike a bicycle or a
computer, a horse needs regular care and most of it
requires that you get dirty and smelly and up off the 
couch. Choosing to leave your cozy kitchen to break 
the crust of ice off the water buckets is to choose 
responsibility. When our horses dip their noses and 
drink heartily; we know we've made the right choice.
Learning to care for a horse is both an art and a
science. Some are easy keepers, requiring little more
than regular turn-out, a flake of hay, and a trough of 
clean water. Others will test you - you'll struggle to 
keep them from being too fat or too thin. You'll have
their feet shod regularly only to find shoes gone
missing. Some are so accident-prone you'll
swear they're intentionally finding new ways to
injure themselves. 

If you weren't raised with horses, you can't know
that they have unique personalities. You'd expect
this from dogs, but horses? Indeed, there are clever 
horses, grumpy horses, and even horses with a
sense of humor. Those prone to humor will test you by
finding new ways to escape from the barn when you
least expect it.

Horses can be timid or brave, lazy or athletic,
obstinate or willing. You will hit it off with some horses and 
others will elude you altogether. There are as many "types" of
horses as there are people - which makes the whole
partnership thing all the more interesting.
If you've never ridden a horse, you probably assume
it's a simple thing you can learn in a weekend.
You can, in fact, learn the basics on a Sunday, but
to truly ride well takes a lifetime. Working with a
living being is far more complex than turning a key in
the ignition and putting the car or tractor in "drive."
In addition to listening to your instructor, your
horse will have a few things to say to you as well. On a 
good day, he'll be happy to go along with the program 
and tolerate your mistakes; on a bad day, you'll swear 
he's trying to kill you. Perhaps he's naughty or perhaps 
he's fed up with how slowly you're learning his language. 
Regardless, the horse will have an opinion. He may choose to 
challenge you (which can ultimately make you a better rider) 
or he may carefully carry you over fences - if it suits him. It all 
depends on the partnership - and partnership is what it's all
about.

If you face your fears, swallow your pride, and are willing to 
work at it, you'll learn lessons in courage, commitment,
and compassion in addition to basic survival skills. You'll 
discover just how hard you're willing to work toward a goal,
how little you know, and how much you have to learn.
And, while some people think the horse "does all the
work", you'll be challenged physically as well as mentally. 
Your horse may humble you completely. Or, you may find that
sitting on his back is the closest you'll get to heaven.
You can choose to intimidate your horse, but do you
really want to? The results may come more quickly, but will
your work ever be as graceful as that gained through trust? 
The best partners choose to listen, as well as to tell. When 
it works, we experience a sweet sense of accomplishment 
brought about by smarts, hard work, and mutual understanding 
between horse and rider. These are the days when you know with 
absolute certainty that your horse is enjoying his work.

If we make it to adulthood with horses still in our
lives, most of us have to squeeze riding into our
over saturated schedules; balancing our need for 
things equine with those of our households and
employers. There is never enough time to ride, or to 
ride as well as we'd like. Hours in the barn are stolen 
pleasures.

If it is in your blood to love horses, you share your life
with them. Our horses know our secrets; we braid our
tears into their manes and whisper our hopes into their 
ears. A barn is a sanctuary in an unsettled world, a sheltered 
place where life's true priorities are clear: a warm place to sleep, 
someone who loves us, and the luxury of regular meals. Some
of us need these reminders.

When you step back, it's not just about horses - it's about love, life, 
and learning. On any given day, a friend is celebrating the birth of a 
foal, a blue ribbon, or recovery from an illness. That same day, there 
is also loss: a broken limb, a case of colic, a decision to sustain a
life or end it gently. As horse people, we share the accelerated life 
cycle of horses: the hurried rush of life, love, loss, and death that 
caring for these animals brings us. When our partners pass, it is
more than a moment of sorrow.

We mark our loss with words of gratitude for the ways
our lives have been blessed. Our memories are of joy,
awe, and wonder. Absolute union. We honor our horses for their 
brave hearts, courage, and willingness to give.

To those outside our circle, it must seem strange. To
see us in our muddy boots, who would guess such poetry
lives in our hearts? We celebrate our companions with praise 
worthy of heroes. Indeed, horses have the hearts of warriors
and often carry us into and out of fields of battle.
Listen to stories of that once-in-a-lifetime horse; of
journeys made and challenges met. The best of horses
rise to the challenges we set before them, asking little in
return.

Those who know them understand how fully a horse can
hold a human heart. Together, we share the pain of sudden
loss and the lingering taste of long-term illness. We shoulder 
the burden of deciding when or whether to end the life of a true 
companion.

In the end, we're not certain if God entrusts us
to our horses--or our horses to us. Does it matter?
We're grateful God loaned us the horse in the first place.

Once Upon A Time....

I got Sonny out to ride and it was the day before a show so Mrs.Jamie was giving me and Sonny a lesson. And Mrs.Jamie decided Sonny was ready to start jumpin' the roll top so we jumped it except when he landed he landed kinda funny and tripped. He was fine so we went on w/ our lesson but the next day when I took him out he could barely walk! So, of course, it set off the waterworks cause I thought he had broken a leg, because THAT was how lame he was. So we called vet and they said he probably just sprained it. They said that w/out even comin' out! They also said to check and see if you can feel his pulse right above his hoof. Well we couldn't feel it so the vet said it proved what he said. The reason he said that is because the blood was flowing toward the sprain faster than the hoof because the hoof didn't have anything wrong w/ it. So that ruled out an absess. The only things left were a) a break or b) a sprain the vet detirmined since Sonny is known to be a baby and awfully dramatic he thought it most probable a sprain. But of course that meant no show so I ended up having to ride Cupcake and in my spare time I would take Sonny out and handgraze him so that he would move around and we could asess his walking:). Within 4 days he was good as new:)!

Well I just got back from the property about an hour ago and before that Lexi, Hailey, and Maddie did there ballet dance(from the Nutcracker)at there friend Summer's church, then we went to the mall and looked at appliances, clothing, and TV's for the house. And it looks like we will not be getting the horses until after the new year:( and we will be spending Christmas in our Grandparents house. At the property I got to drive the quad and had a LOT of fun!!!! Can ppl who have had/has horses on there property comment and give me a couple tips cause I am a bit nervous(seeing that I am only 12 and will be taking care of EVERYTHING concerning the horses!!!!)? Well gtg!

A Dramatic Rescue for Doomed Wild Horses of the West

Tuesday, November 18, 2008; Page A01 The unwanted horses seemed destined for death. The wheels had been set in motion to put down about 2,000 healthy mustangs, those in a federally maintained herd of wild horses and burros that no one wanted to adopt.

The Bureau of Land Management knew that euthanasia was a legal alternative, but officials were proceeding slowly, afraid of an intense public outcry. The wild horses had become too expensive to maintain, and cattlemen argued that turning them loose would be a drain on the already scarce grazing lands of the West.

Then yesterday, at a public hearing in Reno, Nev., to discuss the issue, a solution arrived on a white horse, so to speak.

Madeleine Pickens, wife of billionaire T. Boone Pickens, made known her intentions to adopt not just the doomed wild horses but most or all of the 30,000 horses and burros kept in federal holding pens. Lifelong animal lovers, the Pickenses just a few years ago led the fight to close the last horse slaughterhouse in the United States.

Madeleine Pickens is looking for land in the West that would be an appropriate home for the horses.

She is working with the BLM staff to adopt the horses, said Henri Bisson, the bureau's deputy director, while the agency persuades Congress to shift $20 million in funding to feed and protect the horses now in captivity for another year. As backup to Pickens's offer, he said, two other groups, both animal rescue organizations, have expressed similar interest in adoption. "We are very hopeful that euthanasia won't be necessary this year," he said.

The news that Pickens and others intend to adopt the wild horses and burros was celebrated by animal rights groups, several of which were preparing legal challenges to prevent the government from putting the horses to death.

"Of course, I'm thrilled, obviously, that these horses are getting a reprieve," said Shelley Sawhook, president of the American Horse Defense Fund. "At the same time, we need to address the basic issue of how these animals got in this position in the first place."

Bisson said policymakers have to resolve the conflict between a law that permits euthanasia and a nation that is opposed to it. "This is a situation where we have to have a conversation about what the law requires," he said. "We're hearing from members of Congress they don't think euthanasia is an appropriate solution, but the law says, 'You shall.' " If people don't like what the law says, they need to address it. We hope we will find homes for all of these animals before the year is out and Congress will decide what it wants to do about the law."

Long an American icon and inspiration for song and story, the wild horse has special protection under a 1971 law. The federal statute calls wild horses "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West" that should be "protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death." But the same law also requires the government to achieve "appropriate management levels" of roaming horses so they don't overwhelm federal lands -- and that's the part that has been vexing for bureau officials.

About 33,000 horses still roam wild on federal lands in 10 Western states. About half of those are in Nevada. The federal agency believes the range can accommodate only about 27,000 horses, and each year government-hired cowboys round up 7,000 to 13,000 horses and take them to holding pens in several states.

Right now, there are just over 30,000 horses in holding facilities awaiting adoption. Those 10 or older or those who have not been adopted after three tries can be sold without restriction under 2004 legislation.

Wild horses compete with cattle and wildlife for food and water. Horse advocates say federal officials have made faulty assumptions about the number of horses that can be accommodated on federal land, tilting those findings in favor of cattle interests.

"We're livestock people. We know animals live and die. And we take that as a very normal part of life. We fully realize animal rights people hate that aspect of the livestock industry. We don't particularly seek the euthanization. What we seek is the management of the population," said Jeff Eisenberg, director of federal lands for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, an industry lobbying group.

The federal government has been rounding up wild horses since the 1980s, putting them in holding facilities and offering them for adoption to horse lovers, who promise not to sell them for slaughter. But the roundups became aggressive under the Bush administration. As of June, BLM was holding 30,088 animals, more than triple the 9,807 held in 2001.

Bisson said yesterday that the BLM would limit the roundups next year to about 5,000 horses.

Meanwhile, the pace of adoptions has been falling as the cost of feeding and caring for the wild horses has skyrocketed. The price tag to federal taxpayers for maintaining the horses tripled from $7 million in 2000 to $21 million in 2007. Hay prices for one short-term holding facility in Nevada rose from about $160 per ton in 2007 to almost $300 per ton in 2008, for example.

In a report released last week, the Government Accountability Office called the situation a "crisis" and said the bureau needed to exercise its options, including euthanasia and the practice of selling the wild horses "without restriction," meaning they could be sold for slaughter.

In the first analysis of BLM's wild horse program in 18 years, the GAO found that the agency lacked a coherent nationwide management policy. The GAO recommended that the bureau investigate alternatives to euthanasia and adoption.

Animal rights groups say the government ought to sterilize horses and return them to the wild to live out their lives. In addition, they say, it should offer tax incentives to landowners who allow wild horses to live on private land.

Virginie L. Parant of the American Wild Horses Preservation Campaign, a coalition of about 45 groups, said the BLM does not use a scientifically sound method to estimate the size of horse herds or the number of horses that can be sustained on the range. That makes the roundups arbitrary, she said.

What's more, about 19 million acres of land where wild horses once roamed have been removed from the program, reducing the amount of land available to the horses and increasing their concentration elsewhere.

People on all sides of the issue recognize some fundamental changes are needed.

"It's intractable," Eisenberg said. "The animal rights people put the BLM in a box. We are seeking a balance in the land. Congress doesn't want to put more funding into these holding facilities, especially when times are tight. It's a problem nobody likes."

Life with Sonny aka Sonny Memoir

Here is the Memoir aka Life with Sonny~

My name is Lauren. I am a horse-crazy, 12-year-old Christian girl. I have shoulder length brown almost black hair, lots of freckles, green, blue, and brown eyes, and am 5 and a half feet tall. I became interested in horses at around 2 or 3 years old. I began taking lessons at age 4. I was obsessed with horses and showed it by buying hand-painted high-end toy horses called Breyers all the time and had tons of horse posters on my walls. I rode 1-2 times a week and worked at the barn cleaning the horse urine and poop out of stalls whenever I could when I hit about 7 years old. I had been asking my parents for a horse since before I can remember. My parents said I could get a horse when I was ten because they thought I would grow out of it! But I didn't and when my tenth birthday was "looming" near I started pestering my parents more than ever. Getting a horse meant a lot to me, and my wish was finally fulfilled on a cold January afternoon.

As my parents, my sisters, and I were driving home from church on a Sunday afternoon I noticed something strange. We were turning into the neighborhood that the barn is located. I asked my parents why we were here and they replied, "We just need to drop a check off to Jamie". Well when we turned into the barn I noticed that there was a bay horse who hadn’t been there before. So I asked my trainer, Jamie, if she got a new horse and she smiled and said "No Lauren that is your new horse Sonny". I ran over to where he was standing.

As I wrapped my arms around his neck and breathed in the scent of horses and felt his baby fuzz against my cheek I had this bubbly feeling steal over me. When I finally let go of him my face was beaming as I thanked my parents over and over again for giving him to me. I then looked back at him and saw that he was beautiful rich brown in color with black mane, tail, muzzle, lower legs, and around the outside of his ears, a snip of white on his nose, a white sock on his right back leg, and a white teardrop on his forehead. I then wrapped my arms around his neck again and told him "I love you Sonny". Then he snorted at me as if he was saying, "I love you too, Lauren". Finally a horse of my own.

For a week after I got Sonny I would go to the barn everyday at noon. After that I would only go around 2-3 times a week. Everyday that I went out I would take Sonny and walk him around to eat grass so that he would bond with me and then I would work on his ground manners. He was slowly getting better about not running over me and pulling me to where he wanted me to go. Then we worked on picking up his hoofs to clean out the debris, which could cause bruises if left. Every time we would try to clean out his hooves he would freak out or lie down. When the time came for him to get his hooves trimmed so they would not grow too long and interfere with his walking he was no better. When the farrier came to give him a trim he was in the cross ties and started twisting but the farrier never once let go of his hoof. When Sonny finally stopped twisting and panicking he was almost strangling himself so the farrier went and finished trimming his hoofs and we never had another problem picking up his hoofs again.

When Sonny had to be castrated the second time, because the vet did not do a good job the first time, he had to be put totally under. He was in a lot of pain and would lie down until Mrs. Jamie or I noticed and made him get up so his organs would not get twisted and compressed. Everyday we would have to give him penicillin shots so he could fight off any infections. We also had to separate him from the other horses so he would not rip open the stitches or strain himself in any way. Then one day he went loco.

When Mrs. Jamie was giving Sonny his Penicillin shot Sonny went crazy and almost ran Mrs. Jamie over! He flipped backwards in the cross ties then he took off with the cross ties wrapped around his legs. It was a miracle he did not break a leg. Then he ran straight through the electric fence, and the fence was on! When Mrs. Jamie called me and mom she said the vet was on her way. Mom said that we might have to put him down if he was really loco. I burst into tears. Mom said I was not allowed to go to the barn with her because she said I might just make him more upset. When mom got there the vet said that he was not loco but he had just had a severe allergic reaction to the penicillin. So mom called me and I burst into tears even harder than before because of the relief. Isn't it funny how after you hear they are going to be okay that that is when you cry the hardest?

When Sonny hit 2 years old Mrs. Jamie said he was old enough to ride. So we got him used to the saddle and bridle, then I put my weight across his back and waited for a few moments. Then I put my leg over his back and slowly straightened my back so I was sitting normal. I kicked him slightly so that maybe he would move forward but he was not sure where I went. He began looking behind him wondering where I had gone. So I gently kicked his sides again, but when I kicked him he swung his head around and bit my leg! He was like, "Why did you do that mom?" So I reached down and rubbed the teardrop on his forehead and he moved off a few steps. By the forth or fifth lesson he was already cantering on his own. And now he is 3-and-a-half years old and one of the most solid mounts I have ever ridden.

Sonny and me are now working on jumping, flying lead changes, where the horse changes it's lead in the air, riding bridless, and bareback. Our next big project will be to learn tricks like lying down like a dog, bowing, curtsy bows, where the horse puts his front hooves on a low stool and tucks his head under till it almost touches the ground. I would also like to work on sliding quarter horse stops, where the horse puts his front legs forward and tucks his rear legs under to stop. We also love to mosey around where I board and gallop around the pond. I love my horse.

Hi! I just wanted to tell everyone how great my parents are(OK and maybe brag on them). Well they made this move mostly for me. My dad wanted to move on to water but I had always wanted the horses on property w/ us so we are now moving on to property:)! Sometimes my parents iritate me or make me REALLY mad but still through and through they're usually pretty cool. Like my mom and dad listen to the same music I do!!!! Me and my dad argue which artist is better. I just wanted to tell everyone to appreciate all your parents do for you.

I came across these quotes, and it struck me how much they apply to our country's situation right now. Both are by Winston Churchill, and I will try to explain as best I can about how they apply to the current happenings.

“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see.” -Winston Churchill : Here, this quote is implying that we should learn from past events. With this Bailout and stock market points dropping dramatically, we should have looked back and saw that a similar event happened before the Depression, which caused the Depression. We could be heading into another Depression, but we will trust the Lord with everything we have.

“A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen.” -Winston Churchill :This is a difficult quote to explain, so comment if you see something wrong. What I think Churchill is getting at, is that a politician needs to be able to see maybe not so good things that are going to happen in the future, and try to prevent them, and explain afterwards what they did to prevent it. But like I said earlier, I wasn't completely sure about this quote.

As I wrapped my arms around his neck and breathed in the scent of horses and felt his baby fuzz on my cheek I had this bubbly feeling steal over me. When I finally let go of him my face was beaming as I thanked my parents over and over again for giving him to me. I then looked him over and saw that he was beautiful rich brown in color with black mane, tail, muzzle, lower legs, and around the outside of his ears, a snip of white on his nose, a white sock on his right back leg, and a white teardrop on his forehead. I wrapped my arms around his neck again and told him "I love you Sonny". Then he snorted at me as if he was saying I love you to Lauren. Finally a horse of my own.

Teach your horse to lie down:D!!!

Hi! Here are some directions to teach your horse to lie down~

Teach Your Horse to Lie Down 4 different ways~

1^st Way~

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need~

1~Halter and lead

2~Clicker

Step1

Choose an area with plenty of room when you teach a horse to lie down. This will help to reduce the chance on injury if the horse looses its footing on the way down or shifts too far backwards when completing the maneuver.

Step2

Use a halter and lead to teach your horse to lie down. Grab the lead rope and bring it around to the side of the horse, behind its neck, to the spot where you are standing. Steady the horse and keep it still by placing your hands on the animal's shoulders.

Step3

Lift the horse's front foot (the one that is the closest to you) while pulling the lead away from your body, causing the nose of the horse to point away from where you are standing. This will cause the horse to shift its entire weight backward, toward its rear quarters.

Step4

Repeat this maneuver over and over until your horse sinks its body low enough to require putting its knee on the ground to steady itself. Ensure that you praise and reward the horse for executing this move successfully each time, using either a clicker or a brief scratch to the horse's favorite pleasure spot (such as on the withers). After completing this move, return the horse's foot to the ground, and continue the praise and stroking.

Step5

Push the horse gently to the ground once you have gained its trust through the repeated training, ensuring that you heap additional praise on the animal for completing the task. This may take some time, since the horse's instinct will be to resist falling to the ground. Once you have succeeded in your efforts to train your horse to lie down, you will have deepened the bond between you and the horse.

2^nd Way~

1) Asking him to bend his head around to the outside (away from you) as you stand on the other side
2) While you do that, pick up the front leg nearest to you
3) Use a cotton lead rope attached to the halter to go over the back near the withers, down to the leg.
4) One loops around the leg, just enough to keep a hold of it. You want to hold the leg so that the knee has a 45-degree angle.
5) Your horse WILL fight. He will strike to free his leg, and hop around. Just follow him around, but don't let him have that leg.
6) When he shows the first sign of submission, (stopping the struggling, and starts relaxing at all) release his leg, stop all cues and PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE
7) End session. Never have a session longer than 15 min
8) Practice daily if possible

3^rd Way~

1. Stand on the near side of your horse and pick up his hoof hold onto the hoof pretty tightly
2. With a halter and lead rope on the horse you pull the lead rope around from the off side to you and hold firmly
3. Grab the mane on the wither and slowly pull the front end down.
4. Once he is on his knees you need to push his hindquarters down onto the ground
5. Once down keep him relaxed and leave him down as long as he wants to, make sure he is comfortable and if he wants let him eat some grass if available.

4^th Way~

You really want to make sure that your horse is going well before you start to lay them down. You want them to know the seven games and do them well at liberty - you want to be sure that your horse trusts you. It also really helps if you have already taught your horse to bow, so they know what you are asking when you lower them down.

We use two ropes, and a hobble strap, one rope is the 22' lead and the other is the 12' lead.

Take one hobble strap (undo the other strap and the chain - we use breeding hobbles) and put it around the left front.

Then attach the rope (the 22') to the ring on the hobble and loop the rope up under the right side over the back and back through the ring on the hobble.

Then attach the 12' lead to the right foot - make a loop with it and put it around the fetlock.

Then take that rope and throw it over the back. Hold both ropes near the saddle horn.
This is where it comes in handy to have them know the bow, because you want to pick up the left foot and then get them to lower their head, preferably by bending their nose towards the chest. I give a treat (make sure it's long, like a carrot or you might not end up with all of your fingers when you're done!) and entice them to put their head down between the chest, shifting their weight back.

Then as soon as they kneel on the left knee, take up the slack in the ropes and when they shift their weight forward again, bend down with them and don't let them up.

This is where some strength and agility come into play. You want them to almost fall forward, it gets them off balance enough that you can get the other leg tucked under like the left and then they are basically kneeling. Then you tip the nose back towards you and it shifts their weight just enough that they start to go over with their back end, and there you go! They're lying down.
Every horse that we have ever done this with goes over right away. It usually takes about 3 times of doing it and then all you have to do is pick up their left leg, ask them to put their head down and say "lay down", and down they go. Fable on the other hand, did not want to do it at all, but since we started, we had to get him down, because this is a horse that once he gets away with something once, it is so hard to get him to stop (or to get him to do what we're asking, depending on the situation!
